AVP Crocs Tour 2008 - Long Beach Open - Un avant goût d'Or Olympique - an Olympic Gold taste

C'est parti les hostilités sont ouvertes entre les 2 meilleures paires hommes du moment en course pour le titre de N°1 US et pour la médaille d'Or aux Jeux Olympiques de Beijing.
Le public de Long Beach s'est régalé lors de la finale de l'AVP Crocs Tour - Long Beach Open qui a eu lieu dimanche dernier. En effet la finale a tenu toutes ses promesses... ou presque car le score est déconcertant tellement Jake Gibb et Sean Rosenthal ont maîtrisé le match. Gagné 2-0 et surtout 21-14 21-14 contre les Champions du Monde Todd Rogers et Phil Dalhausser, ce n'est quand même pas permis à tout le monde.
Et pourtant Jake et Sean ont été excellents lors de ce match et dans tous les compartiments de jeu et ont même mis le feu au central.
On avait jamais vu Todd Rogers s'énerver comme cela et surtout contre l'arbitre à qu'il a reproché de ne pas siffler des fautes de toucher de ballon. Inhabituel de la part de Todd surtout qu'il sait que dès qu'il s'énerve il ne maîtrise plus son jeu, c'est lui-même qui le dit...
La pression des Jeux commence elle à se faire sentir?...
Dans le tournoi femmes pas de grande surprise avec une équipe qui domine de très loin le circuit américain. Kerri Walsh et Misty May ont encore fait une véritable démonstration de leur savoir faire technique et stratégique et gagne le tournoi en battant Jennifer Boss-April Ross 2-0 (21-14 21-18).
On ne voit decidemment pas qui va les empêcher de perdre leur titre Olympique.

Public Length Beach is levelled at the time of the AVP Crocs Tour Final - Long Beach Open which took place last Sunday.
Indeed the final held all its promises… or almost because the score is disconcerting so much Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal controlled the match. Gained 2-0 and especially 21-14 21-14 against the World champions Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, this is nevertheless not allowed everyone.
And yet Jake and Sean were excellent at the time of this match and in all the compartments of play and even put fire at the exchange.
One had ever seen Todd Rogers irritate like that and especially against the referee, he reproached for not whistling faults.

In the women tournament not of great surprise with a team which dominates the American tour by far.
Kerri Walsh and Misty May still announced a true demonstration to them to make technical and strategic and won the tournament by beating Jennifer Boss-April Ross 2-0 (21-14 21-18).
We does not see definitely who will prevent them from losing their Olympic title.

La Fédération américaine de Volley Ball a annoncé les huit athlètes et quatre entraîneurs qui représenteront l'équipe olympique de Beach volleyball des États-Unis aux Jeux olympiques de Beijing. Il faudra toutefois attendre la confirmation du Comité olympique US.
Les équipes de femmes sont May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Californie) - Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Californie) et Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Californie) - Elaine Youngs (EL Toro, Californie).
Les équipes des hommes sont Phil Dalhausser (plage d'Ormond, Fla.) - Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Californie) et Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) et Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Californie).
L'entraîneur de May-Treanor et de Walsh est médaillé d'or olympique de volleyball 1988 Troy Tanner (Californie). Le coach de Branagh et de Youngs est Liz Masakayan (Santa Monica, Californie) l'une des meilleures joueuses de beach du circuit américain.
Dalhausser et Rogers amèneront Bob Alejo (Santa Barbara, Californie), directeur de la préparation physique à UC Santa Barbara depuis 2005.
Gibb et Rosenthal seront accompagné du médaillé d'argent olympique de Beach volleyball en 1996 à Atlanta, Mike Dodd (Manhattan Beach, Californie).

USA Volleyball has announced the eight athletes and four coaches it will nominate for the U.S. Olympic Beach Volleyball Team that will compete at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, pending confirmation from the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The women’s teams are Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.). The men’s teams are Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.).

May-Treanor and Walsh’s coach is 1988 indoor volleyball Olympic gold medalist Troy Tanner (California). Branagh and Youngs’ coach is 1988 women’s indoor volleyball Olympian and one of the best beach volleyball player, Liz Masakayan (Santa Monica, Calif.). Dalhausser and Rogers will bring Bob Alejo (Santa Barbara, Calif.), the strength and conditioning director at UC Santa Barbara since 2005. Gibb and Rosenthal work with 1996 Olympic beach volleyball silver medalist Mike Dodd (Manhattan Beach, Calif.).

Jake Gibb-Sean Rosenthal ont délaissé le circuit AVP et l'étape de Charleston pour se concentrer sur le Swatch FIVB World Tour qui passait par Prague.

Cela était d'autant plus important que les américains veulent assurer leur qualification Olympique car d'autres équipes poussent derrière comme Matt Fuerbringer et Casey Jenings qui ont choisi aussi de se rendre à Prague.

Le choix de Jake et Sean a été judicieux puisque non seulement ils ont gagné la Finale, avec un chèque de 28000 $ au passage, mais en plus ils se sont payés le luxe de battre au passage, les 2 meilleures équipes européennes - Barsouk-Kolodinsky au 2ème tour et Dieckmann-Brink en Finale - et les Champions Olympiques sortants les brésiliens Ricardo-Emanuel en 1/2 finale.

Une demi finale qui a tenu toutes ses promesses puisqu'il aura fallu attendre le set décisif et un 18-16 pour Jake Gibb et Sean Rosenthal pour avoir le droit d'aller en finale.

Il est important de dire aussi que Ricardo-Emanuel avaient été battus au 4ème tour par l'autre finaliste les allemands Christoph Dieckmann et Julius brink qui ont fait un excellent tournoi, sortant tour à tour Heuscher-Heyer, Franco-Cunha, Ricardo-Emanuel et Numerdor-Schuil en demi finale.

Alerte pour les équipes brésiliennes qui ne doivent pas oublier que les équipes européennes ont progressé et que d'autres équipes américaines en dehors des Champions du Monde, Phil Dalhausser-Todd Rogers, pouvaient perturber le classement mondial.

 Jake Gibb-Sean Rosenthal forsook circuit AVP and the stop of Charleston to concentrate on Swatch FIVB World Tour which passed by Prague.

That was important as American wants to ensure their Olympic qualification bus of other teams push behind like Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jenings which also choose to go to Prague.

The choice of Jake and Sean was judicious since not only they won the Final, with a money prize of 28000 $, but in more they treated to the luxury to beat, the 2 best European teams - Barsouk-Kolodinsky at the 2nd round and Dieckmann-Brink in the Final - and the outgoing Olympic Champions Brazilian Ricardo-Emanuel in 1/2 finale.

A semi finale which held all its promises since it will have been necessary to await the decisive set and one 18-16 for Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal to have the right to go in Final.

It is important to also say that Ricardo-Emanuel had been beaten at the 4th round by the other finalist Germans Christoph Dieckmann and Julius brink which made an excellent tournament, leaving in turn Heuscher-Heyer, Franco-Cunha, Ricardo-Emanuel and Numerdor-Schuil in semi finale.

Les deux meilleurs équipes du moment se retrouveront en finale demain à 13h30 (heure d'Adélaide). Le casting du dernier épisode de la 1ère étape du Swatch World Tour 2008 est connu maintenant après des demi finales de très haut niveau. Ce sont les brésiliens Harley-Pedro et les chinois Wu-Xu qui joueront les premiers rôles et apporteront tout le suspens possible aux spectateurs.

Demi Finales de haut niveau déjà du fait que les quatres équipes en présence font partie des habituées du carré final et même si les 2 équipes américaines ne sont classées que 13ème (Todd Rogers-Phil Dalhausser) et 26ème (Jake Gibb-Sean Rosenthal) mondiales, leur véritable valeur les classe plutôt dans le Top 10 d'autant que leur classement mondial n'est basé que sur 6 tournois là où la plupart des équipes ont participé à 13 tournois en moyenne.

Demi finales de haut niveau encore, par la qualité du jeu notamment avec un démonstration de style au contre où Pedro, Xu "Tiny" et Phil ont montré l'étendue de leur art du Block.

Les chinois Wu-Xu ont finalement réussi à battre l'équipe qui semblait la plus en forme, vu les matchs fournies ces 2 derniers jours, Jake Gibb-Sean Rosenthal 2-0 (21-19 21-15). Du même coup ils inscrivent leur nom dans les records des notes statistiques de la FIVB car ils deviennent la 1ère équipe chinoise masculine à disputer une Finale depuis que le circuit mondial existe, c'est à dire depuis 1986.

Dans l'autre duel, Harley en défense et Pedro au Block ont monté leur jeu d'un ton pour battre les Champions du Monde Todd Rogers-Phil Dalhausser. Les brésiliens très concentrés, même si on assiste à des délires d'Harley lorsqu'il marque des points, ont réussi à maîtriser le géant américain et gagnent le match 2-1 (21-19 16-21 15-13). il semblerait tout de même que Todd et Phil manque de compétitions car seul Todd a eu l'occasion de faire un tournoi en Février (AVP HWN à Las Vegas) depuis leur dernier match en compétition, le 30 septembre 2007 au brésil.

High level finales still, by the quality of the play in particular with a block style demonstration where Pedro, Xu "Tiny" and Phil showed the extent of their art of the Block.

The Chinese Wu-Xu finally succeeded in beating the team which seemed more in form, considering the matches provided these the last 2 days, Jake Gibb-Sean Rosenthal 2-0 (21-19 21-15). At the same time they register their name in the stats world notes of the FIVB because they become the 1st men Chinese team to dispute a Final since the internationnal beach volleyball circuit exists, i.e. since 1986.

In the other game, Harley in defense and Pedro in Block assembled their play to beat the World Champions Todd Rogers-Phil Dalhausser. The Brazilian ones very concentrated, even if delirious Harley attitude when it marks points, succeeded in controlling the American giant and won the match 2-1 (21-19 16-21 15-13).

It would seem all the same that Todd and Phil miss competitions because only Todd had the occasion to make a tournament in February (AVP HWN in Las Vegas) since their last match in competition, on September 30, 2007 in Brazil.

Cette journée a été marquée par l'impressionnante démonstration de l'équipe brésilienne Harley-Pedro qui comme la saison passée réussissent un très bon 1er tournoi. Les voilà en demi finales après avoir battu les suisses Heyer-Heuscher 2-1 et les néerlandais Nummerdor-Schuil 2-0.
L'autre équipe qui continue sur sa lancée d'hier, c'est les américains Jake Gibb-Sean Rosenthal qui eux aussi se retrouvent dans le carré final. Ils ont gagné leur 2 matchs aujourd'hui contre les chinois Wu-Xu facilement et contre les allemands Christoph Dieckmann-Julius Brink de justesse 2-1 (21-18 19-21 17-15). Un match qui a été gagné essentiellement en défense où Sean Rosenthal a montré toute la qualité technique et d'anticipation de ces diggs.
Pour l'instant il reste encore 2 autres équipes américaines (Phil Dalhausser-Todd Rogers et Matt Fuerbringer-Casey Jenings) en lice pour les demi finales ainsi que 2 équipes néerlandaises, une équipe allemande et une équipe chinoise. Cela pourrait d'ailleurs donné une demi finale avec 3 équipes américaines donc forcément les USA en finale. Mais gageons que les autres équipes ne vont pas laisser les joueurs de l'AVP dominer le tournoi à ce point là.
Quand aux autres équipes sorties du tournoi, les bilans sont mitigés. Car si pour les Ces Brothers cette 17ème place est plutôt un bon résultat vu le niveau, la 13ème place de Franco-Cunha a du mal à passer.
résultat aussi décevant pour les australiens Slack-Schacht (17ème), pour Mesa-Herrera (13ème), pour les russes Barsouk-Kolidinsky et surtout pour Marcio-Fabio (9ème) qui jouent en plus pour la 2ème place qualificative brésilienne pour les JO et qui sont en compétition avec Franco-Cunha et avec... Harley-Pedro qui vont prendre l'avantage surtout s'ils vont en finale. Peu de points séparent ces 3 équipes même si Marcio-Fabio ont de l'avance - 600 points sur Harley-Pedro et 620 points sur Franco-Cunha.

Few points separate these 3 teams even if Marcio-Fabio have advance - 600 points on Harley-Pedro and 620 points on Franco-Cunha.

Une première journée du Main Draw au cours de laquelle les équipes mondiales se sont retrouvées et ont pu évalué où en était le niveau de préparation et de jeu de chaque équipe.
Déjà ponctuée de matchs intenses hier lors des qualifications, l'étape australienne de Beach Volley a une fois de plus tenu ses promesses avec des matchs serrés et des résultats qui donnent le ton.
En effet dans le tournoi masculin on a pu voir tout d'abord une équipe de France, Kevin et Andy CES, accrocheuse et très motivée qui a fait un excellent match face à la paire tête de série N°2 Phil Dalhausser-Todd Rogers. Les français sont d'ailleurs passés de très peu à côté de l'exploit ne perdant que 2-1 (21-18 14-21 15-13) en 1h03. Ils réussiront d'ailleurs, 3h20 après dans le tableau bas, l'exploit en battant la légende helvète Paul Laciga associé à Jan Schnyder 2-0 (21-16 21-17) en 32 minutes. Ils ont bien mérité une bonne nuit de repos avant d'affronter demain à 8h50 (heure d'Adélaïde) - Voir les stats d'avant match ICI (grâce à bvbinfo) - les têtes de série N°...1 les russes Barsouk-Kolodinsky
qui à la surprise générale ont été battus par les néerlandais Boersma-Ronnes.
La paire néerlandaise avaient déjà fait un très bon match de 1er tour puisqu'ils avaient dominé l'équipe de Géorgie en gagnant 2-0 (21-13 21-19) prenant ainsi une option pour prétendre à une place qualificative pour les JO de Pékin.
Phil et Todd ont eu un second match encore plus difficile face à leurs compatriotes Jake Gibb et Sean Rosenthal qui s'est finalement soldé par une défaite 0-2 (22-24 18-21). Ils rencontreront dans le tableau des perdants Geor-Gia (GEO).
Autre mauvaise surprise, les autrichiens n'ont plus d'équipes dans le tableau principal. Les Champions d'Europe Peter Gartmayer et Clemens Doppler n'ont pas réussi à passer l'obstacle espagnol, Herrera-Mesa, et australien, Slack-Schacht.
Côté allemand, tout va bien pour Christoph Dieckmann-Julius Brink qui font un parcours presque sans faute en sortant au 1er tour les suédois Berg-Brinkborg et au 2ème tour les brésiliens Marcio-Fabio qu'ils battent avec un score étonnant 2-0 (21-18 21-12). Cette deuxième victoire est une référence pour Christoph et Julius qui se sont bien préparés ces 3 derniers mois en jouant notamment en matchs amicaux contre... Marcio-Fabio. A croire qu'ils en ont profité pour percer leurs points faibles.
A noter aussi le parcours sans faute des chinois Wu-Xu avec leurs 2 victoires face à la 2ème équipe russe et les italiens Lione-Varnier qui ont fait sensation lors du 1er tour en battant Franco-Cunha 2-0 (21-18 24-22). Il faut dire que Wu-Xu ont pour objectif cette saison de gagner l'Or Olympique chez eux et pour cela ils se sont préparés avec l'un des meilleurs coach du monde et légende du Beach Volleyball, Dane Selznick, qui les suit depuis ces 4 dernières années.
Pour finir il faut parler aussi de l'excellent parcours de Matt Fuerbringer-Casey Jennings qui ont eu à disputer un match de country quota, 2 matchs de qualification et 2 matchs dans le tableau principal en 2 jours, le tout sans aucune défaite. Il faut dire que ce n'est pas non plus une équipe qui vient de nulle part puisque la saison dernière en 5 tournois AVP (ils se sont associés en fin de saison) ils ont réussi à gagner San Francisco, à terminer 2ème à Boston et 3ème à Cincinatti. En plus ils se connaissent bien puisqu'ils ont déjà joué ensemble plus de 75 matchs.

French passed besides the performance from very little, losing only 2-1 (21-18 14-21 15-13) in 1h03. They will succeed besides, 3h20 afterwards in the contenders, the exploit by beating the swiss beach volleyball legend Paul Laciga associated with Jan Schnyder 2-0 (21-16 21-17) in 32 minutes. They deserved a good night of rest well before facing tomorrow at 8h50 (Adelaide time) - See the stats of before match HERE (thanks to bvbinfo) - heads of series N°... 1 Russians Barsouk-Kolodinsky who with the general surprise was beaten by Dutch Boersma-Ronnes.
The Dutch pair had already made a very good match of 1st round since they had dominated the team of Georgia by winning 2-0 (21-13 21-19) thus taking an option to claim a qualificative place for the Olympics.
Phil and Todd had a second match even more difficult against their compatriots Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal who finally showed a defeat 0-2 (22-24 18-21). They will meet in the contenders Geor-Gia (GEO).
Another bad surprise, the Austrians do not have any more teams in the main draw. The European Champions Peter Gartmayer and Clemens Doppler did not succeed in passing the Spanish, Herrera-Mesa, and Australian, Slack-Schacht.
German side, all goes well for Christoph Dieckmann-Julius Brink which almost makes a course without fault while leaving to the 1st round Swedish Berg-Brinkborg and the 2nd round Brazilian Marcio-Fabio that they beat with an amazing score 2-0 (21-18 21-12). This second victory is a reference for Christoph and Julius which prepared well these the last 3 months while playing in particular in friendly matches against... Marcio-Fabio.
Note also the good matchs without fault of Chinese Wu-Xu with their 2 victories against the 2nd Russian team and Italian Lione-Varnier who created sensation at the time of the 1st turn by beating Franco-Cunha 2-0 (21-18 24-22). It should be said that Wu-Xu aim this season to gain Olympic Gold on their premises and for this reason they prepared with one of best coach of the world and Beach Volleyball legend , Dane Selznick, which has followed them for these 4 last years.
To conclude it is necessary to also speak about the excellent day of Matt Fuerbringer-Casey Jennings which had to play a match of country quota, 2 qualification matches and 2 matches in main draw in 2 days, the whole without any defeat. It should be said that's not either a team which comes from nowhere since last season in 5 tournaments AVP (they joined at the end of the season) they succeeded in gaining San Francisco, to finish 2nd in Boston and 3rd in Cincinatti. In more they know each other well since they already played together more than 75 matches.

AVP Albany Hot Winter Nights : Une 3ème victoire pour Rachel WACHOLDER / Third victory for Rachel WACHOLDER

Rachel WACHOLDER et Jake GIBB ont remporté la 9ème et fraiche étape à Albany dans l'état de new York. etape qui n'a pas été de tout repos pour les 2 vainqueurs puisque les 2 poules (hommes et femmes) étaient relevées avec la présence de Sean SCOTT / Stein METZGER / Sean ROSENTHAL et côté femmes Jennifer BOSS / Tyra TURNER / Barbra FONTANA.

Jake GIBB a été royal puisqu'il a survolé le tournoi hommes en gagnant les 4 matchs de la soirée. a noter que pour la Finale il a choisi de jouer avec Stein METZGER et non son avec son partenaire habituel Sean ROSENTHAL.
